The Can Geo Challenge is a fun program and competition for all students. Not sure where to start or have a question? Please see our FAQ below or email us at info@cangeoeducation.ca.
Questions about registering and your account
1) How do I sign up my students?
A. After creating your teacher account, click on the “My Students” tab at the top of the screen to begin registering your students for the Challenge.
2) Can I use my account from the old Can Geo Challenge website on this new website?
A. No, you will need to create a new account and register your students here.
3) I want to register my entire class. Is there an easy way to add all my students all at once?
A. Yes. You have the option to add individual students or import an excel list of your students.
4) Can I have more than one student competing at the same time online?
A. Yes. Once you sign into your account and access the “Administer a Test” page, you should see your list of students. When taking the Challenge online, each student has their own URL for each round. All you need to do is email or share the URL with your students and they will be able to access the questions. You will need to share a URL for each round to every student.
5) I don’t remember my password. How do I reset it?
A. You can reset your password by clicking on the “Reset Password” button on your “My Account” page.
6) Do I have to participate online only?
A. No, you can complete the Challenge either online or on paper (for Level 2 students who move on to the Provincial/Territorial and National rounds, there are different expectations). We are aware that not all schools have access to the same types of technology and we endeavour to provide you with options. Once you sign in you will see the option to either upload your students to the online portal or download PDFs of the questions and distribute paper copies.
7) If I choose to administer the Challenge on paper, how can I access the answers for the test?
A. Downloadable answer sheets are available in the “Print Versions (PDF)” section of the “Administer a Test” page.
Questions about the Classroom and School rounds and School Champions
8) How do I identify my School Champion?
A. Your School Champion will be automatically identified once all the scores for your students who competed in this round are entered. If the test is completed online, then the scores will also be automatically entered.
9) Can I do the Classroom round online and the School round on paper?
A. Yes. As always, you are able to administer the Can Geo Challenge in whatever way works best for you and your students.
10) While completing the Challenge online my internet connection froze. What do I do?
A. If you lose your internet connection while in an online test, do not close the browser window. Students can continue answering questions in the testing window even while offline. Until your connection returns, the “Submit” button will not work, so just wait for the connection to return before submitting the test.
11) How do I administer the School round?
A. Once you have completed the Classroom round, you will need to give your classroom winner access to the School round. To do this, log into your account and make sure all of your students scores for the Classroom round have been entered on the “Submit Scores” page. If the test was done online then the scores are entered automatically. If not, you must manually enter the scores. Your classroom winner will be automatically determined based on the scores that are entered. At that point, you will be given access to the School round test on the “Administer a Test” page, and can share the test link with your student.
12) When will my school winner receive their prize?
A. School prizes will be mailed out at the end of May 2026. If you do not receive your prize by June 12, 2026, please contact us at info@cangeoeducation.ca
13) When will subscriptions begin for my school winner?
A. The first issue you will receive will be the September/October 2026 issue of Canadian Geographic for your one-year subscription. Please make sure you add your school winner’s home address, so they receive their subscription. For any issues with your subscription please contact us here.
Questions about the Provincial/Territorial round
14) How does the Provincial/Territorial round work?
A. All Level 2 School Champions are eligible to participate in the Provincial/Territorial round. From March 3 to 31, 2026, you will be able to access the questions through your account. Additional information will be added to the site closer to the date.
15) Can I write the Provincial/Territorial round on paper?
A. No. The Provincial/Territorial round must be written online in one sitting. Students typically have 30 seconds per question to complete 50-60 questions (a total of 25 minutes).
